Serves: 6–10 (depending on portions)

Ingredients

Hot Cocoa Base (Gluten-Free)

  • 4 cups milk (dairy or any plant-based milk like almond, oat, or soy)

  • ¾ cup gluten-free cocoa powder

  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

  • Pinch of salt

Toppings & Mix-ins (all gluten-free)

  • Marshmallows (ensure gluten-free)

  • Whipped cream

  • Chocolate chips (dark, milk, or white)

  • Mini peppermint candies or crushed candy canes

  • Cinnamon sticks

  • Toffee bits or caramel drizzle

  • Shaved chocolate or cocoa powder

  • Gluten-free cookie crumbles (like almond or chocolate cookies)

  • Nut toppings (optional: chopped hazelnuts, pecans, or almonds)

Instructions

  1. Make the cocoa base:

    • In a medium saucepan, whisk together cocoa powder and salt.

    • Gradually whisk in milk over medium heat until fully combined and smooth.

    • Heat until hot but not boiling, stirring frequently.

    • Stir in vanilla extract at the end.

  2. Set up the bar:

    • Pour hot cocoa into a thermal carafe or large serving pot to keep warm.

    • Arrange toppings in small bowls so guests can customize their drinks.

    • Include spoons, straws, or stir sticks for mixing.

  3. Serving tips:

    • Offer small mugs for individual servings.

    • Encourage layering: whipped cream, chocolate chips, marshmallows, and a sprinkle of peppermint or cocoa.

    • Garnish with a cinnamon stick or chocolate shavings for a festive touch.

Tips

  • For a vegan version, use plant-based milk and coconut cream, and choose dairy-free chocolate.

  • Pre-make a cocoa mix (cocoa + pinch of salt) so guests can just add hot milk or water.

  • Consider adding flavoured syrups like caramel, hazelnut, or peppermint for extra variety.

  • For a fun twist, you can offer small shot glasses of liqueur (if adult guests), like peppermint schnapps or Bailey’s, keeping the main base gluten-free.
